A blank canvass and an infinite color pallet with no subject parameters can be daunting to an artist. Where do you begin? Having parameters can help — limitations can actually drive creativity.
That’s why the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana believes its next exhibit will be attractive to artists.
RED is exhibit limited to a single color, which, you guessed it is red.
Entries for RED are limited to the red color spectrum. Black and white may also be included but do not need to be included. Work with any color other than red will not be accepted at drop-off. Frames and matting must also only be black or white.
This is an open-call exhibit, so register to drop-off your work by Jan. 9, then bring your RED piece to the Arts Council of Jan. 11. Ohio Valley Art League Executive Director Samantha Denson will jury the exhibit for entry as well as for awards. The Arts Council will notify artists by Jan. 13 if they were accepted into the exhibit.
The exhibit will run Jan. 24 to March 2.

September 15 marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, and the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana wanted to celebrate.
To commemorate Hispanic people and culture, explore the newest exhibit at the Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery, “La Vida.”
The exhibit features 31 pieces from 21 artists in the Evansville region. You can view the exhibit in person now until Sept. 24.

The country celebrated Juneteenth this weekend, the newest federal holiday. In honor of Juneteenth, the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana is proud to present Lift Every Voice.
The exhibit features 26 entries from 15 artists. The themes center on Juneteenth, Black joy, and the continuing struggle for civil rights in America.
The exhibit is available to view in person at the Arts Council’s Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery at 212 Main St. in Downtown Evansville now until July 15.

Art in the City isn’t a normal Arts Council exhibit.
Art in the City doesn’t have a central theme like other ARTSWIN exhibits sometimes do. The annual exhibit is showcase of entries from ARTSWIN members, all of which have diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and stories to tell through their art.
The results is more than 50 entries from regional artists, including paintings, photography, ceramics, stained glass, and more.

A group of textile artist banded together during lockdown to create a new exhibit inspired by the children’s game of telephone.
You remember the game: One person says something to one person, and that person repeats the phrase to the next, repeated several times until the phrase morphed into something different by the end.
Fifteen members of Studio Art Quilt Associates Indiana chapter decided to play their own version. Over a period of five months, three groups of five artists worked together. One artist would submit a photo, which was interpreted into a quilt by another, that artist took a photo of their quilt and then sent that to another, ultimately resulting in four interpretations of the original photo. The end result is 60 quilts, inspired by 15 photographs. None of the artists were shown the original photos before, or during the process.
“The collaborative experience of a single photo evolving through four interpretations brought an awareness of how we see life from our own perspective, are inspired by others, and share our vision of the world through our own creativity. The results were surprising, sometimes quizzical, but always insightfully creative,” according to an exhibit statement provided by SAQA-IN. Each piece has includes an artists statement to explain their thought process. As part of a new initiative at ARTSWIN, artist statements and entry tags are available in both English and Spanish.

High school students who live in the 8th Congressional District have the opportunity for their work to be featured at the U.S. Capitol and get a free trip to Washington D.C.
Rep. Larry Bucshon’s office will accept submissions from 8th District high school students for the 2022 Congressional Art Competition until April 27.
The event takes place across the nation, providing an opportunity for members of Congress “to understand, acknowledge and honor the artistic talent of their high school constituents,” according to a news release from Bucshon’s office. The event is open to all high school students who live in or attend a school in the district, including those in home school.
The over-all winner of our district’s competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The winner of the People’s Choice Award (artwork with the most likes, comments, and shares on Rep. Bucshon’s Facebook page) will hang in the congressman’s Washington D.C. office for a year.
The winner from the district will have their work displayed for a year in the United States Capitol Complex in Washington D.C. The artist will also receive an invitation to attend the winner’s reception for the art competition in Washington, D.C. this June.

The winner, which is chosen by a panel of local judges, will be notified during a reception at the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana in Evansville at 4 p.m. CDT on Tuesday, May 3. All artists, teachers, family and friends are welcomed to attend.
All submissions are due by April 27.
Art intake will be done by scheduling a time to drop off the artwork at a district office (Terre Haute, Evansville, Jasper, or Vincennes) or by having a staff member of Congressman Bucshon’s pickup artwork at a local high school. Artwork must be two-dimensional. Art works entered in the contest may be up to 26 inches by 26 inches by 4 inches in depth (including the frame). Artwork cannot weigh more than 15 pounds. The art work may be:
All entries must be original in concept, design and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws. Artwork must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission. In accordance with this policy, exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed.
Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo or image (including a painting, graphic, or advertisement) that was created by someone other than the student is a violation of the competition rules and will not be accepted.
