Black Opry Revue heads to Haynie’s Corner in May

The Black Opry Revue — a touring showcase of Black country, folk and Americana singer-songwriters — is coming to Evansville this spring.

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, Haynie’s Corner Arts District Association and Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library are presenting the free concert, which is at 6 p.m. Friday, May 6 at Haynie’s Corner during the neighborhood’s First Friday art event.

Black Opry was formed as a way for fans to discover, support and enjoy Black artists in the country, blues, folk and Americana world. The Black Opry Revue showcases the diversity in sound and stories that Black artists offer to these genres.

“Country music has been made by and loved by Black people since its conception. For just as long, we have been overlooked and disregarded in the genre by fans and executives,” according to a statement from Black Opry.

Revue Performers will include Jett Holden, Nikki Morgan, Aaron Vance, Julie Williams and Tylar Bryant.

“Country music dominates this region,” said Zach Evans, community director for Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana. “Evansville is the perfect home for Black Opry Revue to expose country music fans to diverse sounds and stories they may not have the opportunity to experience live elsewhere.”

The concert is free and open to all ages. First Friday features dozens of curated art vendors, food and drinks, live art experiences, music and more at Haynie’s Corner every month from May through October.
