Zach Evans is the Community Director for the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana. Zach performs regionally in the band Corduroy Orbison. He also enjoys graphic design and photography.

More than twenty organizations and individuals were nominated for the 2022 Art Awards celebration, the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana announced on Thursday.

The annual celebration honors individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the arts and cultural landscape of the Evansville community. The event is Saturday, Oct. 22 at DoubleTree by Hilton in Downtown Evansville. The Arts Council will give out awards in seven categories, including the prestigious Mayor’s Art Award. Most of the recipients will be announced at the ceremony, but the Arts Council announced the winners in three categories on Monday.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke will present two Mayor’s Art Awards in 2022 to make up for the cancelled event in 2020, honoring Pat and Lisa Shoulders for their vision and leadership in creating the “Healing Arts” plaza at the Stone Family Center for Health Sciences, and Robert and Marianna Wright, for their support of the Evansville Museum of Arts, History and Sciences and the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Arts Council Award will be presented to Old National Bank, for the ONSD and Old National Bank Hub murals. In addition, the Arts Council will posthumously honor John Engelbrecht and John McNaughton for their extraordinary and foundational efforts to advance the arts in our community.

The winner of each category will be announced at the Art Awards gala, A Spooky Soiree. The event 6-9 p.m. on Saturday Oct. 22, and will include artist demonstrations, dinner, and an awards ceremony. Tickets for the event are available to purchase at this link.

Explore the new On-Ramp exhibit online

The newest ARTSWIN exhibit is a collaborative show curated by four artists who went through entrepreneurial training with the Indiana Arts Commission.

Southwest Indiana artists Joshua Bronaugh, Christina Robinson, Sarah Wolfe, and Zak Will have 40 entries on display int he Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery.

The exhibit is up until Aug. 26. A reception and concert are scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13. Buck Rogers Clark will be performing On The Roof from 6-8 p.m. The concert and reception are free to attend and open to all ages. There will be a cash-only bar.

Learn how to take your professional creative career to the next level

Artists and creatives who are hoping to take the next step in furthering their business should be sure not to miss the Arts Council Next Level Training event in August.

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana is partnering with the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Small Business Development Center to bring free professional development to regional creative entrepreneurs.

Next Level Training is 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 9 at Bob Jones Family Room in Old National Bank in Downtown Evansville. The all day event will include professional development, information on how to launch your business with the Small Business Development Center, working with corporate partners, making the most of digital platforms, website development, and more.


Next Level Training is designed for creatives who are either currently generating revenue from their creative practice and want to expand their business, or for those who don’t currently generate revenue from their creative practice and want to learn how.

The Next Steps Creative Entrepreneur Trainings are brought to you by the Indiana Small Business Development Center, a program of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and the Indiana Arts Commission. This initiative is funded in part through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Explore this new Juneteenth-inspired exhibit, Lift Every Voice

The country celebrated Juneteenth this weekend, the newest federal holiday. In honor of Juneteenth, the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana is proud to present Lift Every Voice.

The exhibit features 26 entries from 15 artists. The themes center on Juneteenth, Black joy, and the continuing struggle for civil rights in America.

The exhibit is available to view in person at the Arts Council’s Bower-Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery at 212 Main St. in Downtown Evansville now until July 15.

Nominate an artist for the 2022 Arts Awards now

Do you know an artist, teacher, or organization who deserves some recognition for their hard work in the arts community? The Arts Council is now accepting nominations for its annual Arts Awards ceremony.

The annual event is a chance for artists, teachers, and organizations to be honored for their contributions to the local arts community.

There are six categories:

  • Mayor’s Arts Award
  • Visual Arts Award
  • Performing Arts Award
  • Young Artist Award
  • Arts Educator Award
  • Arts Project Award

An ARTSWIN committee will select the winners from the pool of nominees for each award. Nominees and award winners will be honored at a special ceremony and party at the DoubleTree Hilton in Downtown Evansville on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022.

Here’s some more information about each category.

Mayor’s Arts Award

This prestigious honor is given to an individual(s) whose contributions to the arts have had exceptional impact on the community. Consideration is given to evidence of long-standing support of and life-long interest in the arts. The nominee must be a current resident of Vanderburgh County whose arts activities have had significant impact on the city of Evansville.

Visual Arts Award

This award recognizes an exceptional candidate from the visual-arts discipline.

Performing Arts Award

This award recognizes an exceptional candidate from the performing-arts discipline.

Young Artist Award

A candidate for this award should be a high school junior or senior in the 2022-2023 school year with exceptional talent in the literary, visual, or performing arts.

Arts Educator Award

This award recognizes an educator who directly influences and engages students of any age through the visual, literary, or performing arts.

Arts Project Award

This award recognizes an arts project that directly influences and engages students of any age through the visual, literary, or performing arts.

Explore the new Art in the City 2022 virtual gallery

Art in the City isn’t a normal Arts Council exhibit.

Art in the City doesn’t have a central theme like other ARTSWIN exhibits sometimes do. The annual exhibit is showcase of entries from ARTSWIN members, all of which have diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and stories to tell through their art.

The results is more than 50 entries from regional artists, including paintings, photography, ceramics, stained glass, and more.

The exhibit is available to view in-person until June 2. The Bower Suhrheinrich Foundation Gallery hours are 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. s

Upcoming Arts Council exhibits include Lift Every Voice, an exhibit inspired by Juneteenth (registration still open), an Indiana Arts Commission Region 10 On-Ramp group exhibit, and a Latino Heritage Month exhibit in September.
