Honoring Arts Council Volunteers For National Volunteer Month

Like many non-profit organizations, the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana relies on support from volunteers to host, support, and organize our many programs at 212 Main and beyond. Whether our volunteers donate time or financial resources, or both, we value the dedication each individual allocates to our organization – and to our regional arts community. 

We begin with our dedicated Board of Directors, a group of professionals and art enthusiasts who advocate for arts and cultural opportunities at the Arts Council and throughout our community. Many of them also generously serve on multiple boards at other cultural organizations in the area.

Beyond our current Board of Directors and past Board Members, we recognize our artists and community members who serve on Arts Council committees, help curate gallery exhibits and rooftop concert events, or amplify our events and programming with friends, neighbors, and colleagues. 
We exist to serve our community and we cannot fulfill our mission of enhancing quality of life and supporting economic development through advocacy and promotion of the arts, arts organizations, and arts education in southwestern Indiana without our amazing community volunteers.

NOMINATIONS OPEN: Arts Council Art Awards 2024

It’s back! The Art Awards are back for 2024; and the ceremony is returning to its original look.

The Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana recognizes individuals, groups, businesses, projects, and institutions that have made significant contributions to the arts in Southwestern Indiana. NEW in 2024: Winners in all categories will be announced in advance of the event, on May 22nd. 

The Art Awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, August 15th, 2024 at City View at Sterling Square. 

The nomination form is available at this link. Nominations are due by 4 pm on May 10th. 

Here are the eligible categories:

Mayor’s Art Award – This highly prestigious honor is given to an individual whose contributions to the arts have had an exceptional impact on the community. Consideration is given to evidence of long-standing support of, and life-long interest in, the arts. The nominee must be a current resident of Vanderburgh County whose arts activities have had significant impact on the City of Evansville.

Visual Arts Award – This award recognizes an exceptional candidate from the visual arts discipline. (Film and literary arts are included in this category.)

Performing Arts Award – This award recognizes an exceptional candidate from the performing arts discipline.

Young Artist Award – This award recognizes a rising high school junior or senior in the 2024-2025 school year who displays exceptional aptitude in an artistic discipline.

Arts Educator Award – This award recognizes an educator who directly influences and engages students of any age through the visual, literary, or performing arts.

Arts Project Award –  This award recognizes a project that utilized the arts to advance community, economic development, or quality of life goals or initiatives in the 2023 calendar year.

Pop-up Pub Featuring Patsy Hartigan’s

Join us for a lively evening at Pop-up Pub On the Roof, hosted in collaboration with our future neighbors on Main Street, Patsy Hartigan’s Pub. This special event is a fundraiser benefiting the Arts Council’s enriching programming.

Date: Thursday, May 2
Time: 5:30-7 PM
Location: Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana, 212 Main Street, Evansville, Indiana 47708

Tickets are $50 per person, with $20 of each ticket being tax deductible. 

During the event, guests will learn to craft two signature cocktails, including the classic Irish Coffee and another exciting drink from Hartigan’s menu. The Irish Coffee, a blend of rich coffee, Irish whiskey, sugar, and cream, has a history dating back to the 1940s when it was created to warm up passengers at an Irish airport. In addition, attendees will savor tantalizing small bites previewing the future offerings of Hartigan’s Pub.

So, snag your tickets and join us for an evening of fun, community, and support for our future downtown Evansville neighbors. Sláinte!

Funding Opportunities from the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC)

The Indiana Arts Commission and the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana acting as the state’s Regional Art Partner announced the opening of applications for the Fiscal Year 2025 Arts Project Support grant program. 

Arts Project Support grants provide nonprofit organizations and public entities with funding to support a specific arts activity, such as a one-time event, a single production, an exhibition, an educational workshop, or a series of related arts activities such as art classes or training sessions.     

The purpose of the program is to provide broad access to arts opportunities throughout the state. Applicants may request up to $4,000 to support their project, and there is no match requirement. Projects must occur between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025 to be eligible for FY25 Arts Project Support.     

“Arts Project Support grants are a wonderful opportunity for Indiana communities to bolster and grow their creative activities,” said Miah Michaelsen, IAC Executive Director. “We encourage organizations and public entities to apply for funding to start new programming, expand existing offerings, or reimagine a community event. Arts and creativity help strengthen the fabric of Indiana communities, and we are proud to support the creative community development work that Hoosiers are doing in every corner of our state.”

January can be a challenging month: too long, yet somehow always flying by, too cold and grey, but not enough snow for this Michigan girl-at-heart, too many items on my beginning of the year checklist. The first half of the month is foggy with a post-holiday-emotional hangover, and the second is a race to complete the tasks I ambitiously assigned myself back in the heady days of December. 

January’s redemption, however, comes in the possibilities that each new year brings when you work in public arts. 

We’ve built out a challenging and interesting gallery calendar, set dates for the “On the Roof” series, and have begun booking bands; emails are swirling – fast and furious – with collaborators for films, performances, and readings. There are calls for public art, calls for artists for community events, and venues secured for celebrations. Our programming season may not kick off until February, but here, even the anticipation is a joy. 

The arts make life interesting, give context to the passage of time and our place in the world, and bring people and communities together. There is possibility, so much possibility, for beauty and excitement and connection in 2024 at the Arts Council, and I’m looking forward to sharing it with all of you.

Before I sign off, here are two items to have on your radar: first, in huge news, the Arts Council is launching our “Month for the Arts” fundraising and awareness campaign in February. Stay tuned for more information, because there’s a role for everyone in ensuring the campaign’s success. Second, Rats Live On No Evil Star, our first exhibit, opens on Thursday, February 1st with a reception on February 3rd from 5:30 to 7 pm. I hope you’ll join us!
